Garage Lighting: Better Light Without Rewiring
LED fixtures swapped onto the fittings you already have, plug-in light over the bench and the bays, and hexagon or strip lighting where the garage doubles as a gym. No rewiring, no new circuits.
Lighting varies more than most jobs, the section price depends on what you want. Quoted properly at the free on-site estimate.
What we do, stated plainly
We fit lighting that works with the power already in your garage. That means swapping a fixture onto an existing fitting, and installing plug-in systems: LED shop lights, strip and hexagon lighting that run from a socket.
We are not licensed electricians and we do not rewire. No new circuits, no new outlets, no moving a junction box, nothing hard-wired beyond a like-for-like fixture swap. If your garage needs any of that, it needs an electrician, and we will tell you so at the estimate rather than taking the job and working around it.
Said another way: if there is power in the garage, we can almost certainly make it much brighter. If there is not, we are the wrong first call.
The problem: one bulb in the middle of the ceiling
Most garages here were lit to a minimum standard and never revisited: a single fixture in the center of the ceiling, sometimes two in a double. It is enough to find the door. It is not enough to read a label on a bin, sort a box, or see what you are doing at a bench.
The specific failure is shadow. With one light source directly above and behind you, your own body blocks it the instant you lean over anything, which is exactly when you need to see. More light in one spot does not fix that. Light from more than one direction does.
What it costs
Lighting is the one service here that genuinely depends on what you want, a single bright fixture over a bench and a full hexagon ceiling are different jobs. We quote the layout, not a guess, after seeing the garage.
Fluorescent and LED shop lighting
The workhorse option, and for most garages the right one. A run of bright fixtures placed over the bays and the bench, rather than one in the middle, kills the shadow problem and makes the whole space usable.
How much light is enough is worth a sentence, because it is the part people get wrong. A parking bay wants broad, even light so nothing is in shadow when the car is in. A workbench wants noticeably more, directly over the work rather than behind your shoulders. And color temperature matters: a cooler, daylight-toned light shows detail and true color at a bench, which is why a warm bulb that suits a hallway feels wrong over a vice.
Hexagon LED lighting
The ceiling grid you have seen in gym and show-car garages. Hexagon panels cover a large area with even, bright, shadow-free light: genuinely functional, not only decorative, because the spread is what removes the shadows rather than the shape.
They suit garages that are also gyms, workshops or somewhere the cars get looked at rather than just parked. Laid out across a ceiling they read as a finished room instead of a utility space, which is usually the point.
Ambient and accent LED
Strip lighting run along the ceiling line, under cabinets, behind a bench or around the perimeter. App-controlled and color-changing where you want it, so the garage can be daylight-bright while you work and something quieter in the evening with the door up.
Accent light is not task light, and it is worth being clear about that: it changes how the room feels, not how well you can see a bolt. Most garages that get it also get proper working light over the bench.
Lighting for gyms and workshops
A garage gym and a garage workshop want opposite things from the ceiling. A gym wants even, flat light with no hot spot glaring down at you from the floor during a press: broad coverage, nothing directly in the eyeline of a bench or a mat. A workshop wants the opposite: concentrated, cooler light exactly where the work happens, with enough general light that the rest of the room is not a cave.
If the garage is doing both, the answer is usually zoning the light the same way we zone the storage: bright and even over the training floor, brighter and more directional over the bench. Mirrors change it again, because a mirror doubles whatever is opposite it: see garage mirror installation.
What needs an electrician
New circuits, new outlets, moving or adding a junction box, adding a switch where there is not one, and any hard-wired work beyond a like-for-like fixture swap. All of that is licensed electrical work and all of it is outside what we do.
We are not licensed electricians and we do not claim to be. What we fit is plug-in lighting and fixtures onto existing fittings, which covers the large majority of garages, because the power is usually already there and simply being used badly.
If yours is one of the ones that needs wiring first, we will say so at the estimate and you can have that done before we fit anything.
Light last, or light first?
If the garage is getting storage as well, lighting goes in after the shelving and racks, we know where the shadows will actually fall once the walls are full. If the storage is already in and the room is simply dark, lighting stands on its own. Either way it pairs naturally with garage upgrades like TV mounting and gym mirrors, and with shelving and overhead racks if the walls are still bare.

Garage lighting questions
No, and we do not present ourselves as such. We swap fixtures onto existing fittings and install plug-in lighting. New circuits, new outlets, added switches and hard-wired work are licensed electrical trades, and we will tell you when a job needs one.
From $579 a section for LED: hexagon, strip or ambient, supplied and installed, and $149 for a fluorescent-style fixture fitted onto an existing fitting. Lighting varies more than our other services, so the layout gets quoted at the free on-site estimate rather than guessed.
Usually, yes. The systems we fit run from an existing outlet, which is why they can go in without an electrician. If the layout you want cannot be powered from what is already there, we will say so before quoting.
The ambient and hexagon systems we fit are app-controlled and color-changing, so you can have daylight-bright while working and something softer afterwards. Accent lighting changes how the space feels rather than how well you can see detail, so most garages pair it with proper task light over the bench.
After, if both are happening. Once the shelving and racks are up we know where the shadows land, and the light can be placed against the finished layout rather than an empty room.
